Finding A Registered Electrician
Electrical work is not something you want to mess with. Things can easily go wrong, and when they do, there can be serious consequences. So finding someone you can trust to do your electrical work is crucial. Where do you even begin?
A good place to start looking would be the Electrical Contractors’ Association of New Zealand – ECANZ. Every ECANZ member is a master electrical who must meet strict safety standards. Using a ECANZ electrician also means that all work carried out is covered by their guarantee, so if a problem arises due to quality of workmanship or safety, they will cover defect repairs up to $10,000 if the electrician will not.
When you go to choose an electrician, make sure that they are registered and have a current practising license. They should be able to show you an ID card issued by the Electrical Workers Registration Board, with their name, registration number and license expiry date.
Checking reviews, like with anything else, is also a good idea. Have a look at what other people have had to say about their work and what they thought about it. This should give you a good idea of who is reliable and who you shouldn’t trust. You will find anyone worth calling online these days, where you can easily find reviews also.
Once the work is complete, you should always ask for a Certificate of Compliance (COC), unless it’s simply been a maintenance job. Electricians fill these certificates out at the end of each fixed wiring job to show they have complied with the NZ electrical safety standards and codes. The customer and the Electrical Workers Registration Board should each receive a copy. This will protect you from liability if something goes wrong with your wiring.
